What is Chiropractic?

friedman_image_1.gifAbout Chiropractic

Chiropractors use controlled forces called adjustments to reduce and eliminate restrictions to normal motion that the body is unable to overcome by itself. Such barriers to normal motion include muscle spasm, swelling, scar tissue and other adhesions. This restriction of motion causes an accumulation of chemical irritants around the joint and nervous tissue, which then causes the pain, increased spasm and swelling felt by the patient.

Chiropractic care is aimed at restoring and maintaining normal joint, muscle and nervous system function, thereby maintaining normal health. Normal function and health is not merely the absence of pain or symptoms, but the ability to perform everyday activities, either at work or play, without any restrictions. Function includes range of motion, flexibility, stability as well as strength and coordination.

The intent of a chiropractic adjustment is to restore proper motion to the spine removing irritation to the associated nerves. There are several adjusting techniques that doctors of chiropractic can utilize in performing safe, specific adjustments. The chiropractic adjustment differs from spinal manipulation performed by physical therapists and osteopaths due to its specificity. Chiropractors remove subluxations not merely manipulate of the spine. Chiropractic is an art and science that takes extensive training and practice to master.
Is chiropractic safe?

You may be assured that your chiropractor is a recognized health care professional, and has completed five years of graduate study. The core curriculum chiropractors receive includes over 4,500 hours of study in anatomy, physiology, pathology, biology, chemistry, pediatrics, geriatrics, nutrition, diagnosis, and many hours of training in an internship program- similar to a medical school curriculum.

Although each patient reacts differently, rarely is the procedure painful. Many patients report that they feel a sense of relief and relaxation following an adjustment. It can cause a variety of reactions from temporary soreness to a sense of euphoria and well-being.
